Veteran13 years building
Background
Born 1987 in Eugene, Oregon; business degree from the University of Oregon. He was working at mobile-games platform PlayHaven (Director of Product, per First Round Review) when he started Product Hunt as a side project. He also helped write Nir Eyal's Hooked (Nov 2014, credited "Nir Eyal with Ryan Hoover"); his site says it sold 500K+ copies.
Why this product
Friends kept asking his take on new tech, and the talk was scattered: "There was no one place for these types of conversations." On Nov 6, 2013 he set up a Linkydink email list, invited a couple dozen startup friends and had a couple hundred subscribers within weeks; he and Nathan Bashaw built the first website over Thanksgiving 2013.
Where it's going
Stepped down as CEO on Oct 22, 2020, citing depression and burnout, and kept a strategic role and a board seat. Since then he invests through Weekend Fund (Fund I $3M in 2017, II $10M in 2019, III $21M, IV $25M announced May 18, 2026). As of Oct 19, 2026 the Product Hunt team page still lists him as Founder; in Jul 2023 he DMed Rajiv Ayyangar to offer him the CEO job.

As of Oct 19, 2026 Product Hunt's privacy policy names Product Hunt, Inc. as data controller and AngelList Ltd as its EU representative. Day to day it is run by CEO Rajiv Ayyangar (since Sep 2023), with Josh Buckley as President.
