Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous on the importance of pre-launch strategy

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a party-based cRPG developed by Owlcat Games launching on September 2nd. GamesBoost42 got a couple of minutes with the team before launch.

The Moscow-based Owlcat was formed in 2016. It released its debut game, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, in 2018. That went on to sell over 1million copies as of 2020. Owlcat also received $1 million in funding from GEM Capital in 2019.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous had a huge Kickstarter campaign with 35,092 backers pledging $2,054,339 to help bring this project to life. However, Owlcat doesn’t think it’s great news for small developers.

“We started preparing for the Kickstarter campaign 6 months in advance. Some game design and development has already been done, but we kept announcing new features on our Kickstarter to get the consistent marketing push throughout the development of the game.” — says Nikita Putilin , head of PR at Owlcat.

“This consistent media effect worked great for us. But we have a rather big team and we’ve already got some PR connections in the industry. Having a community around the game was helping a lot too. If you are a small developer your Kickstarter campaign might not go as smooth”

“It’s all about consistent marketing for us. Don’t let the people forget about your launch, send out trailers, send out press releases, do whatever it takes to get as much of their attention as possible, and get them to pre-order. Pre-order is the only way people can show they are interested in your work, that’s very important.” — says Oleg Shpilchevsky , head of Owlcat studios.

“The key to a successful game launch and consistent marketing is getting the money from all those different sources like Kickstarter, Steam and others quickly. That’s where GamesBoost42 was very helpful for us.”

“GamesBoost42 has been working closely with Owlcat for 4 months now, with them receiving the first marketing funding transfer within the first week they’ve contacted us. Working with the guys on Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous was a real blast and we are happy to see them fly so high up in the store today. GamesBoost42 will continue cooperating with Owlcat ensuring they never have to wait for their transfers from Steam, Playstation Store or Kickstarter ever again.” — says Andrew Postnikov, CBDO at GamesBoost42, who launched 5 Steam titles and multiple Kickstarter campaigns.

Gamesboost42 helps up-and-coming PC, mobile and console games and apps to get noticed and gain hundreds of thousands of new users every month.
